Bedroom BuzzwordsKnow the lingo before you buy your bed ensembles. Bring this list with you when you shop so you'll make better-informed choices:Bedskirt: A decorative skirt that covers the box spring and hangs to the floor. Bedskirts can be ruffled, tailored, pleated or lace-trimmed. Combed Cotton: Cotton fibers are obtained from the seed of a cotton plant. Combing separates the long, desirable fibers from the short, immature fibers to create a stronger, smoother yarn. Duvet: A comforter with European origins. Once only feather and down-filled, duvets now include polyester fill as well. Though duvets come in a variety of sizes, they typically have an 18-inch drop from the top of the bed that allows a decorative bedskirt to show. Duvet Cover: A cover that fits over a comforter or duvet. It fastens at one end via buttons or Velcro. Often described as a "giant pillowcase" for a comforter. Covers with a high thread count are the softest and most durable, and they keep feathers from poking through the comforter. Egyptian Cotton: Cotton grown exclusively in Egypt and the longest fiber staple in the world. This means less linting, more durability, more luster and a softer feel. European Sham: A 26-x-26-inch square pillow. Often used to give a more full and finished appearance, well-placed European squares can take the place of a headboard. Extra Deep Pocket Fitted Sheet: Generous 10-inch fitted corners instead of the standard 8-inch corners fit today's high contour mattresses and allow for extra bedding items to be used for additional back support. Flannel: 100% cotton fabric brushed on one side for softness and warmth. Muslin: Coarse type of plain weave fabric made of various thread counts, up to 160 thread count. Percale: Cotton or blend sheeting of 180 threads per square inch or higher. Pillow Sham: Decorative pillow covering that slips over a pillowcase. Sham: Short for pillow sham. Thread Count: The number of threads (both horizontal and vertical) per square inch of cloth. The higher the thread count, the softer the "hand" or feel of the sheet, the more durable the sheet, and the less likely the sheet will pill. Sateen: Woven fabric with a smooth surface and lustrous sheen that resembles satin. |
